Applications
Question
What types of lights will the SMART Dimmer Plus™ work with?
Answer
The SMART Dimmer Plus™ will work with commercial LED light fixtures and also T8/T5 light fixtures.
Most LED fixtures today come with 0-10 V dimming as a standard control. And the SMART Dimmer Plus™ use 0-10 V dimming to control the lights.
Bi Pin T8 and T5 fluorescent lamp fixtures can also be dimmed by using a 0-10V dimming ballast. If you want to keep you existing T8/T5 fixture you can still use the SMART Dimmer Plus™ to control these lights.
And if you have older T12 lamps, you can upgrade fluorescent light fixtures to T8 lamps and install 0-10 V dimming ballast and benefit from even more savings.

The SMART Dimmer Plus™ is rated for indoor use.

SMART Dimmer Plus Advantages
Question
What are the main advantages of the SMART Dimmer Plus solution?
Answer
The six main advantages of the SMART Dimmer Plus.
- The SMART Dimmer Plus Solution is designed for easy installation into new LED fixtures and to retrofit existing fluorescent fixtures. All of the work is done in the fixture. Your existing wall switches are left unchanged and no new wires need to be added overhead or in your walls.
- You could save up to 70% on your lighting energy bill with SMART Dimmer Plus solution.
- Depending on the hours of operation of your fixtures, and our low cost, you can expect to see payback in less than 2-3 years.
- Unlike traditional occupancy sensors, the SMART Dimmer Plus™ can dim the lights instead of turning them off. We can also turn the lights off. Having residual light versus the lights off is particularly important for hotels, warehouses, stairwells, etc.
- Our patented technology enables the SMART Dimmer Plus™ settings to be easily adjusted in the field to make your workplace productive and to your liking by simply toggling the existing wall switch.

Question
Why do I need to install a SMART Dimmer Plus™ in every light fixture?
Answer
There are a few reason why you want every light fixture to become SMART.
Experience shows that labor is a big factor installing lighting controls. And most systems require a "home run" strategy for AC power and also 0-10 V control wires. This extra wiring and conduit labor costs exceeds the cost of installing a SMART Dimmer Plus™ into each fixture. Also this extra labor might require a lot more disruptive work area or may need sheet rock to be opened up. Again, more labor costs and hassles.
By installing SMART Dimmer Plus™ into each fixture you will gain energy savings through fine granular control. Why brighten and dim large zones if only a small portion of the zone is occupied?
Cross Lighting can also be achieved with each fixture has individual control. This is an energy savings that is important in large open cubicles areas.

Power Savings
Question
Does dimming really save power?
Answer
Yes. For both LED and fluorescent light fixtures, you will lower the power consumed by the fixture when you dim the lights.

Sales / Quotes
Question
Do you sell your SMART Dimmer Plus kit through distributors and if so who are they?
Answer
Customer can calls SMART Light direct for a quote or contact a local electrical distributor such as Graybar or C.E.D. Please give SMART Light a call for the best local contact for your project.

Installation
Question
What skill level does it take to install the SMART Dimmer Plus?
Answer
An electrical contractor or technician who maintains your fluorescent lighting should be able to easily install the SMART Dimmer Plus and Motion Sensor.
Installing the SMART Dimmers into a LED fixture takes are 10 minutes.
Installing the SMART Dimmer into a fluorescent fixture, and installing a new dimming ballast, takes about 15 minutes.

Lamps
Question
Do you support CFL fixtures?
Answer
No. The SMART Dimmer Plus™ uses an industry standard 0-10 VDC dimming control to brighten and dim the lights.

Lamp Life and Dimming
Question
Does dimming lower the life of the ballast or bulbs?
Answer
No. Lamp and ballast life is largely determined by the number of on/off cycles. By dimming the lights, instead of turning them off/on frequently, you will see longer lamp life.

Question
How many times can the ballast and bulbs be turned on and off?
Answer
The ballast and lamp manufacturers typically specify 10,000 or more on/off cycles before a failure and typically offer 5 year warranties.

The T8 Retrofit Kit
Question
What does the SMART Dimmer Plus kit contain?
Answer
Each kit contains the parts to retrofit one fixture. One or more kits are shipped for each customer order. Each kit contains 7 types of items.
- The SMART Dimmer Plus Controller
- The SMART Daylight / Motion Sensor or the SMART Motion Sensor. We offer both types depending on your application.
- GE Ultra Start dimming ballast

Wiring And Installation
Question
Do I need to add any conduit/wiring outside of the fixture?
Answer
No. You only install the SMART Dimmer Plus inside the fixture next to the LED driver or dimming ballast. The SMART Dimmer Plus™ is connected to the sensor with a cable.
Your existing wall switch or circuit breaker are toggled per the instructions to change the SMART Dimmer Plus settings and configurations.

T8 / T5 Lamp Types
Question
Will the SMART Dimmer Plus work with linear (4' long) and U shaped fluorescent lamps?
Answer
Yes. 0-10 V dimming can be done on Bi-Pin T8 and T5 linear fluorescent lamps. And this applies to the straight and u-shaped lamps.

Rebates
Question
Do I qualify for utility rebates and if so how difficult is it to get them?
Answer
Most utility providers do offer some rebates on for both LED and T8 lighting control retrofits.

Wall Switches
Question
What if I have bi level switching or multiple switches for one area?
Answer
If your area has bi level switching, one of the switches will not be needed. In most cases the switch is removed and new cover plate is installed.
If there are multiple switches for a given area, they will all still work for manual control. No new wall switches, conduit, or wiring is needed.

Question
I have dual wall switches that control my lights will they work?
Answer
Yes. Since either wall switch controls power to the fixtures you can configure or modify the fixture operation by toggling either switch.

Ballasts
Question
What types of dimming ballasts work with the SMART Dimmer Plus™?
Answer
Any T8 / T5 0-10 V dimming ballast should work. We recommend the GE Ultra Start and can supply this ballast with the Retrofit Kit. Other 0-10 V dimming ballasts will work such as Advance, Sylvania and Universal.

Question
Can I order the ballasts and tomb stones myself versus getting them from SMART Light in your Retrofit Kit?
Answer
You can buy ballasts and tombstones from your local supply house. The advantage buying a Retrofit Kit from SMART Light is we buy in quantity and can offer our customers a lower price than they might be able to get from other suppliers.

Question
I already have dimming ballasts. Do you sell the SMART Dimmer Plus kit without the ballast?
Answer
Yes. You can buy just the SMART Dimmer Plus™ and Sensors.

Question
I have fixtures with 6 lamps in my warehouse. Can I apply the SMART Dimmer Plus to those fixtures?
Answer
Yes. You will need two replace your existing ballasts with 0-10 V dimming ballasts and also install one or two SMART Dimmers. Depending on how you want the lights controlled there are options. Please give us a call to discuss this configuration.
